About

Hi, my name is Rich Poley. I wrote the book Self-Massage for Athletes and created this website to help active people like you relieve muscle pain and soreness.

I discovered self-massage while training for a race I had no business doing. I was too old, too lazy, and way too out of shape to do an ironman distance triathlon: to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles, and then run a marathon. I needed something to get me through the training and race day. I found it in my hands, self-massage, it worked wonders. I finished the race and felt great at the finish line.

I had no formal massage training when I started. I was a lawyer, which just goes to show that anyone can learn self-massage. Because there were no books on the subject, I decided to write one for active people, something that would help relieve muscle pain and soreness, prevent injuries, and speed recovery.

Along the way I discovered more benefits of frequent massage. A massage a day keeps the doctor away. By strengthening my immune system, self-massage did wonders for my health. It won’t cure the common cold but it prevents it. Massage also reduces stress which improves mood.

But maybe most importantly what I discovered about self-massage is pain relief. Ten minutes a day is all it takes to feel better fast. Massage is a way of turning your fingers into pain relievers.

I hope you like the website and the book.

Keep in touch,

Rich Poley

P.S. Here’s a list of pages and what’s on them:

  1. Resources: links to all the sports videos and articles on the site

  2. Benefits: the real advantages and disadvantages of self-massage

  3. Techniques: 7 massage strokes for you to try

  4. Videos: massage videos for specific sports and activities

  5. Workshops: hands-on clinics and workshops

  6. Links: to other websites of interest (mostly to me)

  7. Tools: cool massage tools to try

  8. Reviews: why athletes say they like my book

  9. Buy: the book here or at Amazon, where it’s cheaper

  10. Contact: send me an email

  11. Blog: stuff I thought of that wasn’t quite good enough for the website

At the bottom of each page you can view a sports video. Some offer instruction in yoga or crunches, but most are wild leaps off mountains, literally and figuratively. See how many of them you can perform. If you believe you can do them all, you’re obviously insane. If you know of any videos that should be included, let me know. I’ll give you a free book if I upload your recommendation.

Hope this website exceeds your expectations,  have fun, stay awhile, play awhile.

Every great workout deserves a massage
